Over the years, my Facebook creeping has led me to notice more and more males signing up each November for the phenomenon that has become Movember. Movember is a month-long charity event that encourages men (or perhaps some women) to grow moustaches and generate donations for Prostate Cancer Canada (and other various men’s health charities worldwide).
October is inundated with breast cancer events that put the spotlight on a key women’s cause. The amount of money and awareness raised for breast cancer is profound and I am in no way trying to diminish the the importance of the cause! I, in fact, personally participated in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer walk and loved every minute of it! I do, however, think it’s great to conclude October with a shift to a similar focus on the opposite sex, transitioning into Movember with a lighthearted focus on an important issue that affects many men.
I am a sucker for a good success story, and Movember is a classic example of just this. A few guys were sitting around drinking beer, and their conversation about 80s moustaches (and their desire to bring them back) morphed into what would soon become a global charity. Dream! And it’s no wonder this has been such a hit- Movember is a clever concept, supported by an interactive, engaging website that is informative while remaining tongue and cheek. A perfect recipe for success – long live the Mo!
