Getting to FITC Toronto in a Box!

All the way back in January, Jacquelyn pointed me toward a post on one degree. FITC, otherwise known as  Flash in the Can, was giving away free tickets to the first one hundred women who posted videos on YouTube telling the the FITC organizing committee why they wanted to go to FITC.

Pen and Paper

You were able to record a live video, edit a flick, or post a marvelous Flash/actionscript project, just as long as the media could be posted to Youtube, tagged, and linked back to their online subscrition form. Easy, right?

I spent a month and a half fussing over what I would do. I’m a Project Manager at Espresso, so I am typically the one organizing developers and designers, but I love the process and thrive on the learning. Despite my inexperience on that side of things, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to go to an amazingly geeky conference for five days for free. (This is quite the steal!) I observed the other contenders’ posted videos every week, hoping they wouldn’t number a hundred just yet! Thirteen, twenty, thirty-five, forty-three… panic was about to ensue, until finally, I put aside my worries and just did it, already.

Tip to tail, the entire fifty second film took about two hours (including the drawings) and was posted the next day, thanks to some intense pen-to-paper action and the assistance of my friend, Clark Masters. Within hours of my submitting the online application form, I received a really nice email from Shawn at the FITC telling me that I was in.

In other great news: there are still some spots remaining! You can join me and get to FITC for free if you too are:

  • female
  • interested in the event
  • in possession of a webcam or video camera
  • able to figure out some editing software
  • the owner of a youtube account
  • able to come up with a concept and get things going!

Enjoy the experience and hopefully we’ll see you there!

Great video! Made me laugh. Hope you enjoy our event and find it useful. A good friend of mine who’s a project manager came out last year for the first time and she ended up landing a great job via our Get A Job event and then insisted her new company send her this year because she learned so much the first time.

My advice for new attendees: Have fun. Meet lots of people. Ask lots of questions.
