I can’t lie. Until just a couple of weeks ago, I thought that following celebs on Twitter was just a starry-eyed pastime to keep kids occupied. Then I received an office-wide email from Caroline, highlighting the best in Twitter offerings in five categories: brands, media, television, celebrities, and electric artists.
So I checked it out.
I looked at the feedback; at what was being said about those who fared well in the rankings, and decided to “follow” a couple and see what they were all about. I started with Ashton Kutcher, Shaq, and Jimmy Fallon, later adding Demi Moore through her hubby’s account.
So far I’m definitely entertained.
Shaq is hilarious and engaging, speaking in southern slang and enticing fans to come find him by handing out hints. Ms Moore is cute – not always as active as the others, but the romantic in me finds her back and forth banter with Ashton really cute. And, on his own, Ashton definitely holds it down, appealing to his followers with humour, spirituality, and some really cool pics/videos.

Last week something came up that really caught my attention, and sparked my interest on a deeper level. Some conversation between Ashton, Demi, and John Mayer (who I don’t follow) seemed to offhandedly result in the three of them taking on a project to benefit inner-city kids. Amazing!
It happened like this:
John Mayer said he wanted to have a loosely organized get-together with Twitter fans; something on a conscious vibe. Ashton said he’d be down, in the direction of helping out a school in south central (LA, that is). Demi said she’s in. Ashton decided to organize it and get the details together. And a plan was born.

The initial online organization is reminiscent of another well done charitable event – #HoHoTo – that took place this past December, with proceeds going to the Daily Bread Food Bank. I’m really interested and excited to see how this pans out, and if having it out there on Twitter at such an early stage will force the accountability factor.
What are some other great social causes being taken on? How have you gotten involved with your community?
